The Arran Portfolio Hans came to us last year with a mesmerising selection of very different photos of Arran, in both colour and black and white. What makes these photos so unusual is that they capture some dramatic atmospheres that you don’t see on typical postcard images of the island. Often dark and moody, some images are striking. Even more unusual is that the book also contains images of the island which contain some very subtle nude photography - not the sort of thing you expect on Arran, but very tastefully carried out. Published by Arran Graphics, 104 pages (inc cover). Paperback. Please note cover image may differ from that shown. |

The Isle of Arran Most of the illustrations in this book are reproduced from postcards, a large number of which are reproduced from photographs taken in the 1890s. The cards themselves were sent to all parts of the world, 90% of them by people holidaying on the island. Messages, and even addresses, can prove to be most interesting. The number of postcards of Arran that have been produced is uncountable, and over the years more and more continue to come to light. Images of Lamlash and Brodick are numerous, and even Lochranza is well represented. The Steen series of the 1920s, featuring views around Lochranza, was numbered and runs to at least 57. |
